PROJECT SUMMARY

The Tonkin Highway transformation delivered a high-standard north-south transport link from Muchea to Mundijong, reducing bottlenecks and improving safety. The Tonkin Gap Project addressed the two-lane bottleneck in Bayswater and Redcliffe, cutting travel times by up to 11 minutes during peak hours and enhancing connectivity for road users, pedestrians, and cyclists.


Associated works supported the METRONET Morley-Ellenbrook Line, with rail-enabling infrastructure including underpasses, dive structures, and bridges at Broun Avenue for future Morley Station access.


Key upgrades included:

  • Widening Tonkin Highway with new lanes from Dunreath Drive to Collier Road.

  • New bridges over the Swan River, Dunstone Road, Guildford Road, and Railway Parade.

  • A fully grade-separated Principal Shared Path (PSP) on the western side of Tonkin Highway.

  • Noise walls, upgraded lighting, and intelligent transport systems (ITS) infrastructure.

OUR ROLE
  • Delivery of over 22km of slipform 1.42m high barrier. All associated end treatments and transitions. Insitu concrete retaining wall structure, trench excavation and preparation. Structural fill to barriers.

  • Install of slipform Barrier up to 2m high.

  • Insitu reinforced concrete retaining walls 2m high.

  • Safety barrier to bridge transitions.

  • Bridge deck insitu concrete barriers.

  • Barrier Trench Excavation, compaction and preparation.
